Greggory's oncologist had never run a marathon. He is a father of 4. I guess you wouldn't call him out of shape but he was not a runner. But train he did. and he ran the Boston Marathon... every 26 miles of it in memory of Greggory. Below is a letter he sent me and a certificate that I received from Dana Farber.
Peggy and Joe,
As you know well, it'll be one year next week since Gregg's
death. I'm sure that the anniversary will be a hard time.
I imagine February won't be your favorite month for a while. I
wanted to let you know that I'm thinking about you and I have fond
memories of Gregg. I also wanted you to know that I've become
temporarily insane and I am training to run the Boston Marathon as
part of the Dana Farber challenge team to raise money to for cancer
research. As part of the program I can dedicate my run to people I
know who've been affected by cancer. With Gregg's love of
running, I can think of no better person to include in my dedication
for my run. I know if Gregg were running the race with me he
would probably run me into the ground. But as I'm running this
April, maybe Gregg will look down on me and laugh a little. Or
maybe a thought or two about Gregg will give me a second wind at mile
22. I hope things are going well for you. I hope that
Johanna is enjoying school and adding a little variety to your
life. I hope that you two are finding ways to contribute to
your family and community that will bring joy into your life.
My thoughts are with you.
Sincerely,
Mike
